Guys, for heaven's sake this is just a football game. To get up in arms about a quote by a member of the church over him being proud of a win and how his seniors went 4-0 against the Y and how his juniors and sophs have gone 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. Why shouldn't he be pleased with that? Besides, if the roles had been reversed you would be proclaiming the greatness of Mendenhall right now and how we should be proud of the undefeatedness of the Sophs, juniors, and seniors. This entire topic is sad.

Second, I don't and never will get why some of the Y fan base dares to question my or any other LDS-Ute fans loyalty to the church. It is absolute and total B.S. Seriously, there is no argument that can be made that would make that claim a cogent argument. BYU football is not and never will be the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. BYU football is only relevant to the mission of the church in that the church's name is associated with it. That is all. My faith resides in the Jesus Christ as Savior and redeemer, Joseph Smith as the first prophet of the Restoration, and President Monson as the current one. Football is meaningless to that faith. And yes I get after Utah fans that disparage the church just as vehemently as I go after you people. It is not right and they generally are silenced right then and there.

The gross vitriol that spews from a vast minority of each fan base is disgusting. And this questioning of faith is among the worst of it!

Amen, brother! I find it hard to root against returned missionaries (whatever team they play for). But in the end, it's just rooting for a football team - it's not like we are drawing battle lines and lives are at stake. Bragging rights <<<<<<< real life issues.

And, on that President Monson singing video, you could tell his heart really wasn't in it! ;)

Here's where you're wrong. If Bronco would have said that I would have said the same thing. One cannot brag about "not losing" to a team one refuses to play. It's a stupid thing to say. It's too bad some people (for whatever reason) cannot admit that it's a stupid thing to say.

KWhitt was pointing out fact. A fact that should put Bronco in a lot of trouble. The best news of the last few years' for Bronco is that this rivalry is going away for two years. It just might save him his job (if he can get us to 8 wins this season. I don't think that his job is salvageable with less than an 8 win season at this point.)

The point of this thread was that quitingham's so-called "fact" is a stupid fact. It's an unimpeachable man rule - one cannot claim any points by not being defeated by a team that that person refused to play. If he had a man card he would have had to turn it in. That was the point of the thread.

Oh for sure. And it's a good point. I wasn't saying anything in my post about it or you, ABYU.

I was commenting in reference to the "if you're an ex-member and active LDS" blah blah blah, and hoping to steer the thread back to your OP, away from all the mish-mash.

Got it.. I misunderstood your point (and I happen to agree with it as well)

So Cougs_rule a few bad apples spoil the bunch? Does that mean I should judge all BYU fans off the ones who pushed me after the game, or the ones that threatened me before, or the ones that tried to run into me while I was making my way to the back of the line before the game?

More importantly should we judge church members as being ponzi schemers because a few are in the Orem/Provo area?

Actually it seems like California members are the most likely to be involved in Ponzi schemes, unless you actually meant MLMs.

Wow is all I can say! I don't read/post Cougarcorner much, so infrequent I had to open a new account to post as I forgot my username....the exception is if there is a big game or BYU plays ND. I checked in to see how my fellow Cougar fans are handling another defeat, I am as sick as all of you. I was born at BYU, my family are huge boosters and tight with the athletic office....I love BYU and hope my kids attend the school.

This chain of comments is horrible. I am proud to be a BYU fan, but this is embarrassing for the school, fan base and yes the church. We need a reality check here. BYU was beat and has no one blame but itself.

My family is full of BYU grads, I grew up a BYU fan. I also know a lot of Utah fans who are great people, I love them and know they are not the types described. EVERY school has idiot fans and players, including BYU....I do not plan to call out every person who does something I disagree with.

If you can't tell from my handle I am an ND fan and grad, second a BYU fan. I hate would hear what you will all say about me.......

I love active banter but the amount of vitriol is unhealthy. Wow! Maybe you should move back east (NYC area) and very few care about either school, life is much happier. If you think the things the U fans say are bad try being an ND fan, everyone hates you!

I am not sure I want to post during or after the ND game. Wow this forum makes me sick....

While that may be true, that's a cop out that let's the Utes off the hook. The idiot fans among the Ute fan base are far bigger in number, and far worse in behavior, than those among the BYU fan base. It's not even comparable.

Utah again named most ponzi schemes. I know it's the trib and you aren't allowed to read it. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/52091892-79/ponzi-utah-state-fraud.html.csp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Speaking of juvenile....nice one Dutson.

The point I was making supported much of the criticism of LDS ute fans. They are far more interested and active calling out BYU fans than they are their own despicable Ute brethren. And oh can we hear the crickets from byUte. Bc I can almost guarantee that byUte hasn't ever dropped his religion or character discussions on a Ute forum. Why? Because of course he doesn't want to "cast his pearls before the swine that so many (not all) Ute fans are. He'd rather cast stones at his LDS brethren.

There are too many LDS Church Member Ponzi schemers everywhere. I live in Ventura County there have been two huge ones - highly publicized. In at least one of them a couple joined the Church and then started to prey on Ward and Stake members. I have also had a well-intended former California Bishop track me down in Hawaii to get me to invest in one that had duped him into thinking it was great. My step father got duped by a guy in Utah who had been to prison, repented ha ha, and got him and others buying into the world of starting and buying and selling companies, starting off-shore banks. I always knew my step father was an idiot, but he lost hiscmoney, mom's money, and dragged friends and neighbors down with it too. Utah one. My father-in-law got burned by more than 1 in Utah before I married his daughter. But here iscmy favorite one that nailed him and my wife. I married right into this one, unknowingly, and had to bail my wife out of it. My fiance was a lowly data entry operator for a company that claimed to factor accounts receiveables. They had sales people selling investments into the company promising ridiculous returns. They told their Peon employees like my wife, that if they referred anyone, they would get a $500 bonus. So my wife told her dad about this wonderful opportunity knowing that he fancied himself to be a big mover and shaker. Get this. He tells her - yes, this is great. His Bishop had already told him about it and he had already bought some. So he bought some from his daughter. Then for years he was mad because she did not pass the $500 on to him. It gets better. When it all fell apart, the bankruptcy trustee sued all of the sales people and even all of the investors for not knowing better than to promise or expect such high returns. It gets better, since my wife sold 1 and only 1 and sold it - refetred it actually - to her own father she was lumped in with the sales people as a defendant. She got sued a few months after our wedding. Her parents wete sued with the other investors. My BYU Law School graduate buddy finally got them to drop my wife as a defendent. Her dad not only lost his investment, he had to defend his lawsuit and settle. Utah one. My dad got nailed by the former bank manager in Heber. Step mom got nailed too. I have probably forgotten a few.

The Prophets have warned Church members but they just keep lining up like lemmings.

Where do all of these idiots come from that fall for this stuff. Greed plays a part. And with two parwnts and two step parents and my in-laws getting burned - bam! There goes the old inheritance.

Anyway - does it matter whether more is in Utah or California. And when simeone joins the Church to dupe the members - is it Mormon Ponzi?

Got my BS from BYU. All of it. See what I did there? Got my MBA from Utah. Would have gotten my piled higher and deeper - PHD if you are not following - from UCLA, but instead put that off - forever as it turns out - and got a job.

My Ute comment is limited to my experience in the Biz School and decades later sitting in reserved seats on the 50 yard line - my wanna be rock star buddy from '73 has season tickets there - I have never bought a ticket to any U sporting event - ever - unless I bought my own in '80 when I went with same buddy and my wife to eventually be - 2nd date but with a 3rd wheel.

I digress.

In B School, and I was a TA for the Associate Dean, and a certifiable Jack Mormon at the time - did not hate Mormons - just did not think much about them other than being relieved to be away from what at the time seemed like petty honor code stuff. Sheesh. The Brigham Young Ststue had a beard after all.

Anyway, I was not even slightly sensitive to criticism of the LDS Church, cussed a lot, and had very long hair and a whopper of a beard. My dad told me I looked like Jesus. He was even more Jacked in his Mormonism than I was.

But from day 1, that faculty and staff leadership msde it absolutely clear that the U was not BYU, not LDS influenced, and basically opposite of all of that and proud of it. I am sure some of the faculty felt differently. Maybe many. But they were not the leaders and they were not vocal. The leaders smoked pupes, carried around trays of exotic tobacco blends. The faculty did not perform mock baptisms or put Y in urinals. My boss proudly pointed out that U was theory based - not that rote memorization non sense at BYU. He was a Harvard Grad. Fit the wanna be Ivy League culture there. I really liked him. Admired him. But as I said everything about the B School seemed ro resonate we are not BYU - we are superior in academics to BYU - and proud of it. No swearing during prayers, though. Wait - no prayers. No beer throwing. But elitist and snobbish. John Huntsman's brother waa famous and respected in Finance. He seemed to be quiet, though. Not a vocal leader. Maybe he and people like him are the issue at hand - the silent majority that have gotten the message - do not rock the we are not BYU boat. But no heathen behavior at the B school.

Fast forward a few decades. Fans in the affluent seats where I sit - absolutely shamefuk. Not my buddy. He is not LDS but is respectful of it. Does not like being non LDS and living here. Tires easily of BYU fan arrogance. But acknowleges that the tail gate behavior every week and especially ruvalry week, the walk wuth drunk fans from there to the stadium, and the behavior in the stands by plastered fans - many of whom own the businesses that sell you cars, jewelry, plaaric surgery, stc., referring sarcastically to the predominant religion, the priesthood, etc. The BYU cheer leadwr baloon dill annually molested all. Embarrassing.

There are a lot of them. Filthy. Vile. Mean. And a lit of quiet fans who seem to have been trained to not rock the boat. Like my friend who is not LDS, many are silently embarrassed by all of this. No regard for even wimen or children that are exposed to this.

I was seated near many Ute fans in Provo in faculty staff seating and saw students wearing red waljing on campus as I went to buy my royal Blue shirt. Loved the unis. These people were all treated politely and with respect. That absolutely would not happen in reverse at RES

You would not be safe.

Many good Mormon students attend the U because it is closwr, family history, or they could not get into Y. A very obnoxious minority has made them a vwry silent majority.

It is about religion. It is sad. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with attending the U as a faithful Mormon and there is nothing wrong with rooting for your team. I think it is silly to roit fot for whomever is playing your rival. But nothimg immoral about that and plenty of Y fans do it.

It is wrong to hate anyone or anything. And rooting against BYU is not the same as rooting against your Church - even though BYU doing well helps the Church.

Go Cougars

What specifically is a cop out? No one is letting the Ute fans that have issues off the hook, I am simply saying to paint every Ute fan as the same is idiotic. Should we paint every BYU fan as the fans berating the officials and throwing drinks? There are a lot more good fans than bad fans, you don't notice the good fans. Why can't a fan cheer in a respectful way for their school. I see a lot of BYU fans give a pass to BYU fans who act inappropriately, but want to classify every Utah fan as the same based on a few bad fans.

Are there likely more Utah fans that dislike the church than that of BYU fans, of course. Do more Utah fans drink? Yes. So what? What school is more closely aligned with its underlying student body to BYU than any other? Utah. This is a football game, it is a GAME.

The more people have to deal with comments like these the more they dislike BYU. People at other schools, like ND, Wisconsin, GT don't make fun of or tease as much as Utah fans because they don't know nor care about BYU other than on the field. Of course there will be more banter between BYU and Utah, it is a rivalry and the proximity and religious aspects draw in the crazies from Utah so you hear it more and you hear it louder.

Again, no one justifies the bad Ute fans. Realize there are great, church going (and non-church going) fans. They are not bad people by who they cheer for. I know plenty of non-Utah living Ute fans back east that are LDS and they don't cheer for BYU and treat them as a rival but want their kids to attend BYU because it is a great school for LDS kids to attend.

Time to differentiate the team and the school, someone can cheer for their school against the football team and still support the school and its mission. There will always be haters who hate BYU, deal with it and move on. If God really cared about football and the most righteous always teams always won, then we all better start learning are "hail marys"......we know that is not the case.

BYU/Utah is small potatoes compared to big time football, I have experienced this elsewhere and there is no comparison. This was a 1015 pm ET game between two teams ranked 30-50. The difference is religion. I have never felt physically nervous at a Ute game in BYU gear.....ever, a few snide remarks......try wearing ND gear to a lot of other places and you will see hatred.....try wearing Alabama gear at Auburn, try Clemson gear at SC, LSU gear in the state of Alabama, Georgia gear at the swamp, UT gear in College Station, Michigan gear at Ohio State. Now wear BYU gear in SLC, even to a game.....not even remotely the same.

Happy to talk football and get off of this silly thread. On a side note, perhaps someone will want to talk BYU/ND football in a few months? ND has a ton of holes and BYU could have a chance if they have someone who can pass the ball by then......let's talk in November.
