This is only true if they are standing on the line at the end of regulation or an overtime and miss one of 2, which Kyle did tonight in both cases.

Carlino was 2/2, so would have to have been from one of the others...

This stupid game should have never went to OT. Kyle got fouled at the end of regulation and should have shot FT's. Carlino gets fouled 3 times on his way to the basket at the end of the second OT and no foul. Stupid ass refs choked on their whistles when it mattered most. Disgusting!!!!!!!

Yeah the play you referenced at the end of regulation was a pretty bad call, not only did they not call the foul, but they gave the ball to portland. Blew it on both counts.

Agreed, but to think KC would have sealed the deal with a FT is far from a given. I like to think he could have done it though. Go Cougars!

Hey he only would have had to have hit his average to win it.
Ironically, Portland shot free throws worse than BYU did even after starting red hot.

BYU lost this game on the boards. You cannot give 2nd chances time after time after time and win.

Frankly, I will need to look at stats to figure out how we kept it so close with Portland dominating the boards and raining down 3s.

Mr. Consistency was inconsistent from the opening tip -off.

Rose should have put in some fresh legs late in 2nd OT and played aggressive defense.
Looked it up

More Steals, fewer Turnnovers, and fewer Fouls kept us in the game. Portland out shot us percentage wise on all fronts and out rebounded us slightly.

My bad. I watched the game on KSL Internet Radio - must have thought they said Carlino Instead Of KC on one of his 1-1 trips or thought they said missed on one that he made. It is tough to track via radio with people coming in and out of the room.

Carlino had a mostly great game. 7 steals. 25 or so points. He did take 3 or so I'll - advised shots which are reflected in his shooting percentages being a slight bit off his recent 50% streak.

I think Rose has done a fantastic job. But if there is one weakness that I think he has, it is finishing out games. Not taking time outs when he should, wrong personnel, wrong plays. Last night there was no reason for KC to be holding the ball when you have TH and SH on the floor and in an obvious fouling situation. I put this one on the coach for not getting the ball into TH's hands at the end of the 2nd OT. BYU gets the W if they had done that. What was infuriating on that play was that TH was spread to the far side so there wasn't even a prayer to get it to him. This is the second game in a week like this when they gave the ball to a low FT shooter in an obvious fouling situation. Either Rose is missing something or TH isn't stepping up (or maybe he thinks he has too many points and wants to spread the wealth). But the ball should be in the hands of TH. If not then SH or MC. Never in KC's hands when you know they are looking to foul.

I have to say, it is pretty frustrating seeing these teams play us and have career nights. Its like football in the old WAC days. Every game was the other team's bowl game.

We had no answer for their Dutch National center (27 points) or their Sharp-shooter (8-15) from 3 pt land. That is an ideal inside-outside game. They didn't defend perimeter, gave up 18 O rebounds, KC misses 6 FTs and has 6 TOs. Hard to win with those stats and yet they were close to winning. KC needs to bounce back and Mika needs to heal as he is not the player he used to be prior to the hip injury.

I thought Mika would help more on rebounding than he would on offense. It's been the complete opposite.

Portland hammered Gonzaga about 2 weeks ago and Gonzaga did not get to OT. This is not a crappy Portland team.

thank you imua,

a voice of reason. actually, instead of game planning to keep the ball from KC, just take KC out of the game. haws, mc, Halford, some dude from the end of the bench who practices fts and either Sharp, mika or Austin likely wins that game in 2nd OT.

It's pretty basic stuff. take KC out of obvious fouling/game-on-the-line situations.

Yeah. Let's put Mika at the FT line. That 0-4 speak was a confidence builder.

The problem is this - it is hard to name 3 FT shooters that make me confident that they will hit 2 of 2 under pressure and impossible to think of more than 3.

Haws, Halford are two. MC shots around 70% probably the best 3rd option. Take the other two and put them in the corner to create more space and to keep the ball out of their hands.

It's coaching 101. Get the ball into your best FT shooters hands when its fouling time. In this case you have three TH, SH, and MC. All three can get the job done at the end of the game.

I agree that KC should go stand in the corner or by the basket at the very least. They double TH and SH and you just pass the ball to your guy standing under the basket by himself because it's now three on one around the basket. I have yet to see a team be successful when doubling two guys at the same time. It rarely leads to a TO but usually an easy basket for the team being doubled.

As for Gonzaga, they are down this year. If you hadn't noticed they are not ranked in the top 3 let alone the top 25 with losses to Dayton and a decent KSU. So I say sure Portland is up when you look at their past but that doesn't mean much outside of the WCC. I think BYU is now playing down to the level of competition. Portland has beaten only Gonzaga and BYU. They gave Mi St. a run but MSU had just been ranked #1 so they were probably looking past Portland.

To me the frustration is that BYU is better than every other team in the conference but we are not playing like we did at the start of the season. We are no longer the GFGH team, we are now the "BBAGS" Better Be A Good Shot" team or the "OMP" One More Pass team. MC and other players are passing on wide open shots and it is getting frustrating.
C

We are not the best team in the WCC. No true PG. Weak at the 4. No depth at center. Too many poor shooters and poor free throw shooters. Mediocre rebounding. Mediocre shot blocking. Relatively young.

Gonzaga is not the beast they normally are. They did beat LMU and Pepperdine on the road. We did not. We play them in 20 minutes.

Portland giving BSU a run was no more of a fluke than BYU giving Oregon a run.

We are a pretty good team and fun to watch. Just not up to the upgraded OOC and WCC schedule.

We have some home games coming up. That will help.
