In my limited experience, players are coached to fake a player out of his shoes to get an open shot and fake them into the air and then lean into them to draw a foul when one is needed. It was surprising to see Jackson Emery make that mistake only because he is sooooooo good on defense.

I don't think the foul on Emery was a bad call, either. The way the rules are written, that is a foul.

That said, Jax did an amazing job of getting out of the way, and almost avoided the contact entirely, and for that reason it could have been a no-call. I have no problem with it being called, though.

Jackson wasn't in the air when contact was initiated.

And it's not like that was a gamechanger... it just goes to show that when a call could go for byu or at least be nuetral, it will always go the other way with these poor excuses for refs.

I honestly do not understand how people can claim that we do not get the calls when we shoot mroe FTs than the opponent. BYU shot 24, SDSU shot 17. Take away the few we shot late when SDSU was fouling, and we still shot more throughout the game. ON THE ROAD.

This officials whining needs to stop. We get plenty of calls. Some good, some bad. But there is no BYU bias based upon FTs and foul calls this year. BYU has shot 150 more FTs this year than opponents, or about 5 per game. BYU has also committed 62 fewer fouls than opponents, or about 2 per game. The officials bias hold no water. But some see what they want to.

Do me a favor, look up average number of attempts, average number of opponents attempts, and then compare them to this game. Just because one team shoots more FTs than another does NOT mean the officiating was in their favor in any way. This reasoning is downright ridiculous.

Last I checked, FTs are typically have a direct correlation to fouls called. BYU shoots more free throws because they get more foul calls against their opponent. The stats show it. So while they are generate 2 more fouls per game, they get 5 more FTs/game. BYU does get the calls. Not less. Maybe not as many as you perceive, but they statistically get the calls. Using the numbers, argue otherwise. And good luck with that.

hey, as long as BYU gets more calls than the opponent, there's no way that the refs are not calling fouls, especially against Jimmer as he drives!

I have to disagree with this. While the officials have not cost BYU any games this year, it does not mean that they have called a "fair" game. Saturday, Jimmer was being absolutely MUGGED every time he drove and he shot exactly 0 free throws in the first half. How is this possible? you can't tell me that the officials didn't see the fouls, they just decided to not call them. That is bad officiating. The aggressive team should get more calls then the non aggressive team, just like the aggressive player should get more calls then the jump shooter. Teams are starting to play Jimmer more and more physical and he is responding by taking the ball right at them and the officials are swallowing their whistles. This is ridiculous IMO. Just because 2 teams shoot a similar amount of free throws, it does not mean the game was officiated "fairly" it just means that the aggressive team got robbed of free throws when fouls should have been called.

BYU ranks #37 nationally in FT attempts per game. We are #1 in FT attemps/game in the MWC. We avg. 24.4 FTs. against SDSU, we had 24, pretty much right on average. Go take a look at the teams ahead of us, and not many are great teams. Even UVU shoots more per game, but does not help them.

By the way, we tied for #42 in 3-pt % overall at 37.7%, but we are #27 in attempts for 3-pt FGs. Which means we are a perimeter team that gets to the foul line. And there are few teams that shoot as many 3's and get more FTs. Teams like Oakland, for instance.

Also, Jimmer averages 7.4 FTA per game.

Which is down significantly from last year. Of course, if you had listened to the podcast you'd have known the statistical evidence that shows BYU is not getting the calls they were last year.

All of these numbers are missing my point. BYU is getting to the foul line but not as much as it should be. Jimmer in particular is not getting to the line like he should be. How can 2 - 3 guys hacking at his arms and head during drives to the basket not get a trip to the free throw line? His turnovers....most of the time he gets nailed on the arm which jars the ball loose. A team can shoot more free throws then an opponent and still not get to the line as much as it should. I repeat.....0 foul shots in the first half for Jimmer, he drove the basket multiple times in the first half with no foul called after being mugged. Bad officiating.

Ah, box score analysis at its finest. Only when it was obvious did BYU get calls on Saturday. Jimmer puts a hand on a guy and he gets whistled, but when he goes to the hole and knocked down 6x in the 1st half nothing gets called. It was a completely obvious attempt by the refs to get BYU rattled and get under their skin i.e. cheating. BYU outshot SDSU and the refs on Saturday and I loved it. (I honestly thought the first and last 8 minutes of the game were called very fairly but in the middle the refs just went insane and tried to take over.)

Lawboy, I appreciate the point you are trying to make, but it is clear you didn't watch the game.

Anyone that saw the James Anderson handcheck foul, and the absolute mugging of Jimmer on an off ball screen very soon after couldn't have possibly said this game was called fairly.

The announcers mentioned it a few times, "Wow! They are really letting SDSU play!". They said that more than 3 or 4 times.

Translation "Wow! SDSU is really clobbering BYU and getting away with it!"

Lawboy, you are becoming the king of oversimplification, just looking at BYU's average FT's vs one specific game is not telling of anything.

Kitic has all the box scores from last year and this year. Jimmer's FT's are downs something like 150 year over year versus a very similar schedule last year. (Kitic?)

That means either we're not getting the calls, or Jimmer has gotten MUCH worse at drawing a foul. You can pick which of the two you'd like to believe. This is only vaguely related to the current topic but Jimmer lovers have some substantiave data to back up their claims

I did watch the game. All of it. And the refs missed some calls no doubt. On both ends of the court. All the people here are pointing to the bad calls against BYU, but no one bringing up the preferential calls BYU got. Bad officiating happens. But over the course of a 30+ season game, things will even out. Not perfectly, but so what. It is not a perfect game with perfect people officiating it, is it. Plus, at home, you get more calls. It is scientifically proven. See the SI article on point about homecooking in all sports. SDSU got more calls at home, but we still shot more FTs.

I think I looked at the whole season, didn;t I? 150 more FTs than our opponents on the year. 5 per game. Not sure how anyone can argue we do not get calls with that stat in place. We get more calls than our opponents. 60+ fewer fouls, 150 more FTs. All I did was apply the season average to the SDSU game and said that statistically, we were right on average for the year. You can argue that we should be getting even more calls, and Jimmer in particular, but saying that we are not getting calls in not statistically proven. We get more calls than our opponents and anyone else in the MWC over the course of the season. You can say it is oversimplified, but it is still statistical fact. BYU gets more calls than their foes.

Jimmer is actually averaging 0.4 more FTA per game this year than last year an increase of 7%. But his shots (FGA) are up 3.5 per game an increase of 19%.

Last year Jimmer had one FTA for every 1.96 FGA. This year it's 1 FTA for every 2.57 FGA, a decrease of 31.4%.

Some argue that Jimmer is also taking more three-point shots, and he is. About 15% more threes. But his FTA per 2PA ratio has gone down. He took 1 FTA for every 1.26 2FGA last year and this year it's 1 FTA for every 1.52 2FGA, a decrease of 20.6%.

Jimmer is handling the ball more, taking more three shots and more two point shots and his FTA haven't kept pace. Jimmer has upped his game and the officials didn't keep up.

I don't know what the answer is. Like Lawboy said, BYU gets plenty of calls. We lead the league in FTAs and FGMs. But we "should" be getting even more calls. The disparity should be even larger.

Somehow I can't see Jimmer going to the line 20-25 times a game. I'm not sure I want Jimmer going to the line that much. I think that's too much, because I like a more free flowing game. But I also don't think Jimmer should only be going to the line 4-6 times a game. He gets fouled more than that. 10 FTA is probably about right - which about what he's averaging right now (9.8 ).

I think that it's a fact that BYU and Jimmer get plenty of calls. I think it's also a fact that BYU and Jimmer should be getting more calls. I think it's a fact that a foul on Jimmer is a higher standard than what is a foul on BYU defensively. I don't think BYU and Jimmer get many benefits of the doubt (see Jimmer's 4th foul against SDSU and all the block/charges lately). It seems many of the close calls go against us.

I think BYU did a great job of mostly ignoring the officials and just playing their game. They made plays and didn't let poor officiating become a factor. They kept the game out of reach where a really bad call could really affect the outcome of the game. BYU needs to do more of that.

I was a chain dragger during a high school football game and the refs didn't call a lot of fouls during the game. I asked them at half time why they weren't calling all the fouls and they said that if they call every illegal action by the book, the game would go forever since there were always several ticky tack fouls each play. They only called the fouls if they were blatantly obvious, like off sides, if the foul affected the play, like a holding a D lineman who should have made the tackle, was a dangerous action, or the kid was being a smart ass and deserved it.

During the second half, I noticed that the refs were missing just as many fouls on one team as it was on the other.

Both head coaches knew this and sometimes the refs missed a foul they should have called, but the coaches only complained bitterly for a couple of seconds, a show in front of their players, but they stopped after a very short time.

I'm grateful that the refs don't call every foul in a game. The game couldn't happen. Every ticky tacky foul would be called and that gets really boring, really fast like.

When I was young, if a player took two steps with dribbling the ball, that was travel, plain and simple, but now I see players taking two steps when going in for a basket. I think that is still traveling, but it's not called as much and it's sure is exciting when they do it.

BYULV
Flow or not, I think more fouls need to be called in Jimmers favor because 1) they are occurring way too often, 2) other teams are gaining an advantage by the fouls not being called, and 3) Jimmer is taking a beating and there is a good chance he gets hurt sooner rather than later if they continue to swallow their whistles.
